Abstract
Among public buildings ordinarily used by the public, health facilities hold a critical priority and importance. During field visits following two major destructive earthquakes in Turkey in the last 15 years, damage to hospital lifts in particular has drawn attention. Hospital lifts, which are of great importance in the treatment of earthquake victims, are desired to be earthquake-resistant after an earthquake. In this study, the damages detected in hospital lifts following the 2011 Van earthquake and the 2023 Kahramanmaraş twin earthquakes in Turkey are evaluated, and the techniques developed and implemented for earthquake-resistant lifts are explained with examples.
