Preventative Measures for the Avoidance of Escalator Side Entrapments

Around the world, side entrapment accidents continue to happen and will do so unless a more responsible attitude is taken to try and stop them. A great reluctance by those with specific responsibility for escalators to accept these facts is most disturbing. It is the intention of the speaker to outline some of the options considered as solutions and to attempt to discuss the merits and drawbacks of those options. A major contribution to preventing side entrapments in the UK for 14 years has been achieved by deflector devices being installed on new escalators and retro-fitting on older machines.
