B G James

Friday 1st May 1992

The increasing use of glass in the fabrication of lift cars and lift well enclosures has been very evident in the past decade or so. ‘Exposed vertical transportation’ was a common feature within the prestige buildings, grand hotels, etc, of the Victorian era, and modern architects have not been slow in developing the incorporation of ‘glass lifts’ in new building projects within the UK and the European continent. The UK safety advice and experience is described, as well as new guidance emanating from the European Standards organisation.
